Mew – Symmetry

What were you doing when you were 14 years old? Hoping to make a Junior Varsity sports team? Wishing you could skip forward two years so you could be an upperclassman instead of a freshman in high school? Day dreaming about your crush?

Personally, I was a shy 9th grader with glasses and the most ridiculous poof of hair (think prior to the mainstream of flat irons). Every time someone met me for the first time, they said “Oh! Like Meera Meera on the wall?” The best part was that they thought they were the first person to say that to me.

All that aside, for the past week I’ve been listening to Mew’s 2000 album release Half the World is Watching Me constantly. Mew is a Danish indie band from Hellerup, Denmark.

The musicians that make up this band are older than 14 years old. However, their track Symmetry features (at the time) 14 year old Becky Jarrett. Symmetry can be found on Mew’s 2003 release Frengers and on their 2000 release Half the World is Watching Me.

Jarrett’s vocals are simply spectacular, no matter the age. However, the fact that she was only 14 years old at the time of the recording just makes it that much more amazing. The closest I got to singing like this was a solo I had in 8th grade that I had to sing in front of the entire school. Yes, I choked and messed it up. C’est la vie.

Until next Monday, catch ya later, tricks!
