The Vaselines – Son of a Gun

Typically, I dislike Thanksgiving. This is mostly due to the company I’m surrounded by, excluding my immediate family. Maybe If I was better at small talk, the last Thursday in November would be a trifle more pleasant. But alas! Empty pleasantries are not my thing. Oh, if only I could drown all useless conversations in the sweet, sweet sounds of The Vaselines.

The Vaselines consists of Glaswegians  Frances McKee and Eugene Kelly. The pair parted ways in 1990, but reunited in 2008, releasing an album in 2010.

I recently purchased Enter the Vaselines, a compilation of the band’s entire output. This consists of two EP’s and one LP, all recorded between 1986 – ’89.

The boy-girl call and response vocals, combined with spiky guitars, creates a carefree, DIY vibe. It’s warm and familiar, yet refreshing at the same time (much like a thrift store sweater).

My personal favorite, “Son of a Gun,” is a jauntily messy affair. It sounds as if the whole thing could fall apart at any moment, which is why it’s so fun to listen to.

Now you’ve got a day of guilt-free gluttony to look forward to AND a new favorite song! Aren’t you lucky?! At the very least, give thanks for that.
