Birdy – Shelter (The xx cover)

When I heard Birdy’s haunting cover of The xx’s “Shelter,” I was impressed by her breathy yet powerful voice. I’ve loved The xx’s self-titled album since I first heard it about a year ago, and this new take on one of my favorite tracks does it justice. Before I further researched her, I assumed Birdy would be a pretty 20-something, judging on her voice alone. Though indeed pretty, she’s not quite as experienced in life as I thought. Girl’s 15.

Does this make this cover even more impressive? Yes. Yes it does.

Born in the UK–in, uh, 1996–Birdy grew up in a musical home. Even more of a youngin in 2008, she won the Open Mic UK competition and eventually graced the charts with her first hit, a cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love.” She’s got a mature voice and a mature taste in music. Birdy has released a few other covers, but it’s rumored she’ll be releasing an album of originals, as well. I’ll be curious to see if her songs are as genius as her voice.

This song is like taken from a movie or should be in. It is not like a poem like most song but more like story telling.
