What better way to start the year than with a great song by a promising up-and-coming band? This one will blow your mind: featuring a vocalist who sounds like she could easily be one of the classic soul singers of the 1960s, a well-rounded horn section and snappy swinging beats, the soul-fused rhythm & blues group Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics are a band to keep an eye on in the new year.
“My Dear” is a single off the Atlanta, GA-based group’s debut album It’s About Time, released in Sept. 2012. With an initial start in 2005, this group has taken the years since to develop musically and create a sound for themselves that is utterly unique and memorable. The subtle echo of the piano and vocals makes “My Dear” instantly timeless; it’s a classic sound that draws listeners back to sepia-tinted memories and makes them new again. The jazzy horn section is the perfect match for singer Ruby Velle – together, they join to launch one of the most exciting music projects I’ve heard in a while.
